Gray Winter Days, Manomet, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA

My unscientific opinion is that we've had more sunny days so far this winter than usual. Here are a few of the cloudy day images.  Shown above, Plymouth Harbor is very quiet - few boats at the town wharf and absolutely no boats tied up in the harbor on buoys.

When the whole world is gray, wear red.

Fog and low clouds can even make the gulls less mobile.

The purple tinted rocks are a stairway to and from the beach - rocks don't degrade like a wooden staircase.

The above image confounds me. This is the ice surface of a small shallow pond. Why would the ice form with this tree-like pattern?  There is no tree nearby to cast a shadow, the pond is very shallow and there is no fallen tree under the surface. What could possibly explain the pattern?  Any hydrologists out there want to offer an explanation? Please.

  1. It's water melting and flowing from the rivulets down to the main branch on the surface. Or not.
