Brookwood Farm, Blue Hill Reservation, Milton, Canton, Massachusetts, USA

Not much fall color left by the time I made it to Brookwood Farm this year.

In fact, Maple Lane is almost devoid of leaves.,,,,,,,

Only one tree still showing a golden blaze of nature's glory.

Fall, Brookwood Farm, Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, Canton, Massachusetts, USA

Brookwood Farm is a 70-acre property adjacent to the Blue Hills Reservation south of Boston and offers a pleasant spot for the public to wander around to enjoy the fall colors. It seems the color comes on quickly and leaves quickly, too. (Pun intended).  The well-known and photogenic Maple Lane was the subject of an earlier blog post at this link.

Sadly, an imminent strong wind and rainstorm will strip these limbs of most leaves in a few hours.

But they sure are spectacular before that happens.

Regardless, the fall skies are glorious as is every New England fall season.

Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, Canton, Massachusetts, USA

Blue Hills Reservation is a popular 6,000-acre state park about ten miles south of Boston and is managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. The reservation is one of the largest pieces of undeveloped conservation land within the metropolitan area. It is a great place to wander any time of the year but especially so in fall.

There is a paved service road to the top of Great Blue Hill (635' MSL) popular for walkers and bicyclists. Many hiking trails also weave through the forests. The above bicyclist was zooming downhill and I tried to pan as he went by to get a sharp subject with a blurry background to create visual speed. It ended up a blurry mess but, what I find interesting is that a few wheel spokes on each tire are sharply focused but nothing else is.  The camera was moving, the bicycle was moving and the wheels were moving - each at different relative speeds.

Many leaves have fallen as the season changes.

Nice trails through the forest - many carpeted in pine needles. (Panorama using a arcing motion as I panned the camera to create the curved perspective).

A hazy day but, Boston still looks good on the distant horizon as viewed from the observation tower on Great Blue Hill.

Looking southeast from the observation tower on top of Great Blue Hill.

An aspiring oak tree.......fall is a great season to be out and about in southeast Massachusetts.

Fall, Brookwood Farm, Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, Canton, Massachusetts, USA

Brookwood Farm is owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation as a part of the Blue Hills Reservation. It's a convenient location to enjoy the fall color south of Boston but without the density of development one finds closer to the big city.

No further captions necessary - I'll let these images speak for themselves. I luckily picked a pretty day to visit.

There is a lot to be said for the beauty of a four-season climate like we have here in New England. Though, if I were designing a planetary world, I'd try to figure out a way to not have the bitter cold that comes with winter. Just sayin'..........

Seven Windows, Brookwood Farm, Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, Canton, Massachusetts, USA

I was curious about this barn. Why would someone go to the expense and trouble of installing all these nice windows but make them so small? In any case, the stark contrast, composition, and color called out to me for a photo....... (and the red/white/gray color palette is reminiscent of one of my other favorite interests).......

.....the Priscilla Beach Theatre.

If I was really creative, I would have stuck a happy cow's face in each of these windows........

......hmmm? happy cow faces..............

......sounds like a potential winter project.......

....mooooooooo.

New England Fall, Brookwood Farm, Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, Canton, Massachusetts, USA

My return trip to Brookwood Farm in the Blue Hills Reservation found the full range of fall color on display.

Sort of multiple choice - pick whichever color you want and go to that tree.

This time, I wasn't the only person here with a camera.

It was a beautiful day for enjoying the fall colors.

Having a human in an image usually improves the final result and provides a reference point for scale.

As I was framing my next image, this baby pumpkin fell out of a really tall pumpkin tree and almost hit my head. Seemed like a gift - a seasonally appropriate prop for pictures!

It then jumped up on a stump for a head-on portrait.

Then it nuzzled around on the ground in the fallen leaves.

I carried it to this glen to meet some of the kindred spirits of pumpkin-colored leaves.

It was trembling with excitement at all the color.

Then, another seasonally appropriate vegetable came along to hang out with pumpkin.

Seeing the opportunity for a party, an apple joined the vegetable duo.

They know that Thanksgiving is coming soon and they hope that they don't have to share the dinner table with any dead animals.

They reminded me to watch this fascinating video from a few years ago from the PBS show "Nature - My Life as a Turkey." I'll forever think of turkeys differently - and so might you.

Fall, Brookwood Farm, Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, Canton, Massachusetts, USA

The historic Brookwood Farm is a part of the Blue Hills Reservation south of Boston, Massachusetts. The entire Blue Hills Reservation complex is a beautiful 7000+ acre public parkland close to the busy city life of Boston.

There was still quite a bit of green left on the trees but, if I looked closely, the spectacular color was hiding in plain sight.

I sat a spell on this bench to feel the warm sun on my face on a cool day - one of those old man pleasures - like a scoop of ice cream on a hot summer day.

This whole series is pretty much right out of the camera without extra processing and enhancements.

I'll stop back in a week and see how the color has improved. I'm surprised this place wasn't crawling with photographers or other lovers of fall color.

I really enjoy the beauty of the New England fall season and hope you blog followers all over the world do also!
