I keep two backyard bird feeders filled with black oil sunflower seeds. Mostly just titmouses, finches, chickadees, nuthatches, etc. visit regularly. Sometimes there are 10-12 birds all feeding at once but, when this comparatively larger red-bellied woodpecker lands on the feeder they all scatter quickly. He is not aggressive towards the smaller birds, he just lands, takes his seeds, and flies off. Size seems to be the issue. Whoever said size doesn't matter? (Sorry the image isn't very sharp - I plead the point-and-shoot-camera defense).
I keep saying it's spring but, it sure seems slow in coming this year.
