Bicycling, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy

Life in the walled city of Lucca is lived mostly on foot or bicycle - the town is almost tabletop flat - few have automobiles and those that do, use them only for excursions outside the walls. Life lived at the pace of foot or bicycle is very pleasant and appealing.

I was as likely to see a senior riding a bike as a young person.

And everywhere you walk, these narrow timeless streets remind you this is not the United States - except for the odd motionless mime standing at right - drop a coin in the basket and he/she will move.

And again, from nearly any vantage point in, around, or outside the city, if you have a line of sight to the skyline, a tower is visible above the rooftops. Although most of the towers are attached to churches, others were part of private homes as a manifestation of wealth.
