The Boston First Night New Year's celebration included spectacular ice sculptures at a few locations in downtown Boston. This dramatic representation of comic book/movie character Captain America was located adjacent to the Frog Pond on the Boston Common.
I discovered that ice is difficult to photograph. Getting the right angle so the ice is less transparent and more translucent was my goal.
Here's a good example of not getting good light on the subject. That was really unfortunate - this beautiful soaring eagle was breathtaking.
I have deduced that backlighting is the most effective technique for photographing ice sculptures. Now, if I can just remember that for next year.
Frog Pond was crowded with skaters enjoying the opportunity. When I was there, the line to get in was about 100 people long even as the ice was already crowded.
Although the day was windy and cold, locals and tourists alike were out and about like it was a summer day. Hearty stock these New Englanders.
