Riviera Maya, Puerto Aventuras, Quintana Roo, Mexico
If I were at home today, this picture would be about the blizzard that is impacting up to 100 million people - at least that is the number being used by the excitable news/weather broadcasters. Instead, I am in warm Puerto Aventuras, Quintano Roo, Mexico - where it is ALWAYS WARM - 72 degrees at dawn. A heavy drenching rain is falling this morning - great to make the green foliage even greener. I can see frigate birds wheeling overhead and hear the sound of other tropical species with their raucous cries. And yes, I slept last night with the windows open and only a thin sheet for cover - this is my kind of winter!
This stretch of the northeastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, in the State of Quintana Roo, is known as the Riveria Maya. An approximate 100 mile coastline from Cancun in the north down to Tulum in the south offers North Americans and other international visitors a warm, beautiful, and friendly escape from winter. Cancun is about 1700 miles from Boston and non-stop flights are available - about 4.5 hours! There's nothing better than leaving Boston on a cold, windy, icy 15 degree morning in winter and arriving in 80 degree Cancun at lunchtime! Cancun's international airport is the gateway for most foreign visitors.
