Chatham Light, Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

On the way back home from Provincetown, we stopped by Chatham Light in Chatham.  The  clouds made a great backdrop for an otherwise common view.

The station was established in 1808 as the second light on Cape Cod. And if the common view is too dull, here are a few alternatives made possible through the magic of post-processing (in my case, Photoshop Elements)...........

Around the Town, Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

Coves, ponds, bays, lakes, inlets, harbors - seems like there is water everywhere you turn both in and around Chatham - and boats, boats, and more boats.

Nice place to get married - the Chatham Bars Inn - although the basic rack rate for a summer night is about $500 and up, up, up.

Seasonal flora at the Chatham Bars Inn.

"Rough Bar" - an interesting choice of words at Chatham Light.  I'm surprised this sign hasn't been taken and placed on the outside of the other kind of rough bar somewhere else.

A couple gazes at the incoming tide, slowly rising over the shifting sand bars.

And windy? Yes indeed - it was probably classified as a near gale for you nautical types.

All my life I've heard, "follow the yellow brick road," - perhaps this time it's not such a good idea.

This looks more peaceful - and successful.

Downtown, Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

Strolling in downtown Chatham - it wasn't really as cold as these folks are dressed - but fall weather has definitely arrived. Chatham real estate average is more than half a million dollars (according to Zillow.com) - there is even a single family home currently listed for sale at $9,995,000 (six bedrooms, four baths).

Downtown Chatham's Main Street.

Nice place to sit a spell and peruse the news. Odd place to put a mailbox, though (under the bench).

Fancy town, fancy clock.

300 years old seems old by United States criteria - not so much in the rest of the world. It's funny how we make such a big deal about our years. I don't ever recall seeing much hoopla in towns elsewhere whose known roots go back thousands of years.

It wouldn't be New England without some hot button swirling political issue - in this case, windmills to generate power located in the sound between Cape Cod and Nantucket Island - many folks are opposed to the idea.

A trusty rubber ducky in a toy shop window.

Perhaps true until the headache takes over..........

Fish Pier, Chatham, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

The Town of Chatham enjoys a wonderful location at the elbow of the Cape Cod arm and is about as pretty an area as one can imagine. The Fish Pier hosts many working boats and is a popular spot for folks to watch the goings-on, particularly as the fisherfolk return around midday with the catch. There are a number of seals that like it too - expecting a handout from the boats as they sort and process the day's catch.

In the background, part of the fleet that either didn't go out today or, they have already returned.

The view towards the north from the Fish Pier observation deck.

The view of the harbor from the Fish Pier observation deck.

A view slightly toward the east from the Fish Pier observation deck. (There was a view to the south too - but the glare made for lousy photos.)

Here's one of the hungry seals - I never before realized how much the forehead area and eyes of a seal look like a dog while the large nostril nose area looks more like a cow - go figure.
