Crêpe Stands, 7th Arrondissement, Paris, France

"You, next in line, what do you want?" Of course it was said in French but the message was clear - hurry up, people are waiting behind you. Crêpe stands are perhaps analogous to the American hot dog or pretzel carts although potentially healthier if you order the fruit filled or savory variety. I did neither.

Pouring out the next one.  Consistency of batter and temperature of the perfectly level griddle are the critical  elements to make an ever-so-thin-crepe that still holds together when folded into a cone shape, filled, and handled.

While the crêpe can be filled with savory items, or fruit, or cinnamon and sugar, this youngster opted for Nutella. Who am I to argue with that?  I did the same.

Turning it over to lightly brown the other side.

At another stand nearby, anticipating demand, they are ready with lots of  Nutella jars.

Pouring the batter on the griddle.........

.....and carefully spreading it thinly using a small rake-like implement.......

.....then spreading on a big glob of Nutella.

I have now had the pleasure in my lifetime of not just one, but, two warm Nutella crepes, freshly made on the streets of Paris. I am a happy man. (And I feel less guilty than eating Nutella straight out of the jar with a spoon).

Rest in peace, Michele Ferrero, the man who founded the Nutella, Ferrero Rocher and Tic-Tac empire; he became the wealthiest man in Italy, and died a few weeks ago at age 89.
