Summer Thunderstorm, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA

A summer thunderstorm builds over Plymouth Harbor.  Thunderstorm conditions are dramatic - strong hot gusty winds, bright hazy skies, cumulus clouds building in the distance and stretching across the sky, mighty sentinels announcing the arrival of a frontal passage and cooler dry air to follow.

Looking past one of the pillars at the Plymouth Rock Memorial at the darkening skies.

It turns out the storm passed by just to the north of town but not before providing a dramatic wind and lightning show.  Too bad I wasn't talented or lucky enough to get at least one of the multiple cloud-to-ground lightning strikes that were visible. If I were even more talented, I could simply add lightning with some post processing software - maybe next year......

This is a weather radar view from a different day just to illustrate a point. We take it for granted in this day and age but, it is almost magic to see the weather real time on the readily available radar depictions available to us (source: National Weather Service) - having this kind of knowledge would probably be considered witchcraft in another era.
