Hurdy Gurdy Man, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Spring brings out the regulars in the Boston Public Garden including the Hurdy Gurdy man and his trusty dog, Mackie.  This man regularly appears here to perform tunes on the Hurdy Gurdy, a stringed, cranked, violin-like instrument common and popular in Europe.  Note this man's attire - it fits perfectly with the old world ambiance that the sight and sound of the Hurdy Gurdy evokes.

Here he is opening the top compartment of the instrument to do some tuning before playing.  Those of us of a "certain age" may remember back in 1968 the Scottish singer Donovan sang a hit song called "the Hurdy Gurdy Man."

  3. I am creating a series of mixed media pieces (painting / collage mixtures) using 60s song titles. I just finished The Season of the Witch (Donovan) and would like to do Hurdy Gurdy Man. I love your photo of the man and his dog. I would like to use this as the basis for my sketch, but do not want to infringe your copyright on the photo. If you are willing to let me use your photo in creating my piece, I would greatly appreciate it. I rarely sell my work, so I doubt that there would be any money coming from this painting. Anyway, let me know your feelings about it. Thanks. katherinepippinpauley@gmail.com
