Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

If you didn't arrive at the island of Cozumel via a cruise ship or airplane, the ferry service from Playa del Carmen is about the only other way to get there.  It is an efficient and well rehearsed operation and runs almost every hour. Each leg of the trip for the 18 kilometer voyage cost 156 pesos ($12 USD) and took about 30 minutes.

The boat was modern, fast, and holds about 450 people based on the safety briefing - and I didn't see many empty seats.

This hotel/resort/condo? is just south of the Playa del Carmen ferry dock and the last thing I saw as we departed the mainland. The visual of the stark white of sand and structure against the incredible blue of  water and sky is hard to believe.

The ferry featured live music by a Mexican/Caribbean band to brighten up the 30 minute crossing. A man with a drink and snack tray patrolled for sales but, mercifully, no other hawkers were permitted on board trying to sell the other tourist stuff.

This is the western coast just to the north of the ferry dock in downtown Cozumel. Resort hotels tower in the distance.

This is the main downtown pedestrian mall/street that tracks straight inland from the ferry dock.

Random street scene.

Cozumel is a small island and this is probably the resident's most common form of transportation.

These sculptures caught my eye as I wandered past a gallery.  They were created by two artists who go by the combined name of Carlos Albert.

I'm not sure what materials were used to make the sculpture - perhaps papier-mâché or some other three-dimensional medium..

Heading back to the ferry dock, this is the main street along the water's edge. Many of these whimsical sculptures dotted the sidewalk railings. I don't know if they are holiday seasonal or permanent but they can obviously withstand the elements.

And arriving back in the port of Playa del Carmen, it's time again to stroll the pedestrian friendly international shopping and restaurant district along Quinta Avenida.
