A Night On the Town - State Theatre, Ithaca, New York, USA

I guess it's true at any age but, for a senior citizen, the word "free" is especially an effective magnet. Since I have wanted a look inside the State Theatre in downtown Ithaca, this opportunity was perfect.

The venue is right in the heart of downtown and as a not-for-profit organization, its 1600 seats host more than 75 events yearly including movies, live performances, concerts, and so on. On this particular evening, they were showing the movie, "The Greatest Showman," starring Hugh Jackman. Personally, I have issues seeing Mr. Jackman as a song-and-dance man.  It seems unbecoming for the Wolverine to be dancing and singing. But I got over it.

The entrance hall has this grand, European castle-like feeling.

In this view from the balcony, the audience is just beginning to arrive.

The theatre is celebrating its 90th anniversary this month and the current management team has overseen many renovations in their quest to completely restore this historic venue.

View from the upper balcony - not a bad seat in the house!

It's always nice to be in a venue with crystal chandeliers, heavy velvet curtains, and detailed columns and pillars.

I think one of my favorite observations was the dozens of small children running around wild before the show began - too full of excitement and anticipation to sit still. I don't have the opportunity very often to be in the company of so many children and I forget the delight and abandon and joy they can bring to and demonstrate in everyday life.
