Opening Night - Plymouth Project Arts, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA

For ten weeks during the summer, Plymouth's Project Arts offers free concerts at the outdoor pavilion near Plymouth Rock in the Pilgrim Memorial State Park. You couldn't script a more perfect evening to usher in this year's season. These folks staked out the hilltop opposite the park to enjoy both the music and the commanding view of Plymouth Harbor. (The columned structure at far left is where the famous Plymouth Rock is sheltered.

The group, "The Stompers," played a solid non-stop set of basic rock covers. This Boston-area group has played together for forty years. As you can imagine, they are very good. Just like most of the audience, they are a little bit long in the tooth.

The Project Arts team that makes all this happen is comprised of eight volunteers with a broad range of experience in entertainment and fundraising. It is an all-volunteer effort and funds raised go to fees for use of the park on the waterfront, cost for sound, entertainment, and advertising.

It is mostly a lawn/beach chair kind of crowd although some do bring a blanket to spread out upon. (Us old folks find it easier to get up and down out of a chair rather than the ground).

High quality production values and equipment mean there isn't a bad seat anywhere and people can lounge in comfort.

There are half a dozen food/drink trucks if you didn't think to bring your own food. And "Fire It Up Flatbread" brings a portable pizza oven and cooks up pies to order.

As I surveyed the crowd, it occurred to me that this is mostly an older generation. I wonder where the young folks go for outdoor musical entertainment? Does the new generation even do this sort of thing?

A last look back at the harbor in the fading light. The orange barrels mark the almost finished road and curb work along Water Street.

I took a brief wander through downtown during the blue hour before heading home. This scene is the cupola atop the Post Office Square building at the corner of Main St. and Leyden St. Summer is a special time in "America's Hometown - Plymouth, Massachusetts."
