We have not had a lot of rain this year but, when it does fall it is welcome. Currently, southeastern Massachusetts is experiencing a range of conditions from "abnormally dry" to "severe drought." (Source: United States Drought Monitor).
When I think about it, water falling from the sky seems an odd concept on its face. It is normal to us since we've seen it all our lives and the science of hydrology explains it clearly but, still, that doesn't make it any less odd. Known as the driest place on earth (outside the polar regions), the Atacama Desert in Chile has an average rainfall of only about half an inch a year! In that location, water falling from the sky truly is odd.
