Ice Sculptures - Part 1 of 2, First Night New Year's Celebration, Copley Plaza, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

As part of the Boston First Night New Year's Celebration, Copley Plaza (among other locations in town) exhibited ice sculptures. Since the temperatures have been well below freezing both day and night, it was perfect ice weather.  This dragon was near the Trinity Church side of the plaza.

It is hard for me to imagine how the artist actually carves the ice into such delicate forms without it cracking and breaking.

I saw many folks taking pictures with smartphones or tablets - very few "traditional" SLR-type cameras.

Every dragon needs a dragon slayer.

This spectator had a nice vantage point looking down on the sculptures.

This ice crystal sculpture was located over on the sunny side of the plaza nearer the Boston Public Library.

It was cold and windy - most folks were bundled up.....

...... and the bright sunlight made the ice sparkle like diamonds - a great way to begin a new year.
