Head of the Charles Regatta, Cambridge, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Spectators and vendors line the banks of the Charles River against a background of part of the Harvard University campus.

The Head of the Charles Regatta, held in Boston since 1965, is an annual event attracting more than 11,000 competitors from the United States and more than 30 countries.

The three-mile course is depicted by the white dotted line on the river. Start Line is at lower right, Finish Line at upper left.

Approximately 2000 boats compete with either singles, doubles, fours, or eights for both men and women.

Cambridge Boat Club is the Regatta Headquarters.

Thousands of spectators line the bridges and banks of the Charles River to cheer for their favorite teams or individuals.

Some places along the river are less crowded than others for watching. The adjacent roadway is closed to automobiles for the race days.

I spotted one small quadcopter drone zooming around the riverside filming the event.

Riding to the event by bicycle was popular. (I wish the owner of this bike had an ET look-alike in the front basket - the way he locked it to the fence just cries out for ET).

The staging area near the finish line was buzzing with competitors, spectators, and vendors.

One of those vendors displaying a sleek 8-seater. Your butt-cheeks rest on the small platform that slides along rails with each stroke, your feet (bare or socks) are velcroed (when did velcro become a verb?) into the attached shoes.

Future competitors, perhaps?

More tools of the sport.

This team is from Southern Australia and is being interviewed by NESN, the New England Sports Network.

There's only one way to get the racing shells to the water - carry them.....

Looks like crew racing both requires and helps develop strong arms and shoulders.

In an exasperated voice he says, "but mom, I'm Spiderman, you can't tell me what to do or where I can go!"

While this little fellow, if he could speak, would say, "I'm so tired and little I can nap sitting upright in my daddy's hands."

"Mad Dog Dock Wrangler" is what his official race credential badge says.

I guess that sums it up........
