Seville Cathedral (Catedral de Santa María de la Sede), Seville, Andalusia, Spain

The Cathedral of Seville is such a grand and imposing structure that I can't seem to get just the right images of it. (It seems nearly impossible to not have a horse-drawn carriage in the field of view, either).  So many other people have already photographed it that mine seem uninspired by comparison.  It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world.  That says a lot right there. So, this post will be short.

The amount of gold and silver decor around the main altar area is staggering to behold.

The dramatic towering, vaulted ceiling is equally stunning.

Of significance to a North American, these four pall-bearer statues are holding the sarcophagus with the remains therein of Christopher Columbus! Though he died elsewhere in Spain, his remains were sent back to Hispaniola at some point, then back to Spain again although there is some dispute about where his remains truly lie.  DNA testing seems to have resolved it. Whether you condone his actions as an explorer/discoverer/exploiter or not, his mark on the world is a significant one.
